2 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

Description

Mindfulness is defined as the ability to purposefully bring one’s attention to present-moment experience with acceptance, non-judgment, and non-reactivity (Kabat-Zinn, 1994). It has been incorporated into the treatment of many psychological and physical disorders. Higher levels of mindfulness have been found to be associated with better physical health (Brown & Ryan, 2003; Murphy, Mermelstein, Edwards, & Gidycz, 2012). A trend in current research investigates the mechanism at work and the extent to which mindful awareness impacts health behaviors, such as diet, physical activity, substance use, and sleep quality.

This course is designed to increase mental health practitioners’ understanding of the relationship between mindfulness and health behaviors. We will examine the mediating factors of stress and the pathways through which mindfulness can contribute to the regulation of the body’s stress response system (Creswell, & Lindsay, 2014). A variety of mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral strategies demonstrating empirical effectiveness in reducing stress and increasing health behaviors will be highlighted (Sala, Rochefort, Lui, & Baldwin, 2019), giving practitioners useful treatment approaches to inform their practice.

Learning Objectives

Based on the content of this workshop, you will be able to:

· Describe the relationship between mindfulness and health behavior (eg, binge eating, sleep quality, and physical activity), and recognize facets of mindfulness associated with health behaviors.

· Explain the mediating effects of stress in relation to mindfulness and health behaviors.

· Analyze the role of mindfulness in the regulation of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).

· Identify client factors, diagnosis, and presenting problems appropriate for the utilization of mindfulness-based interventions for health behaviors.

· List clinical presentations where mindfulness approaches may be contraindicated.

Audience

This program is appropriate for licensed psychologists and other mental health practitioners who utilize or are interested in integrating mindfulness-based interventions into their clinical practice. Training is at an introductory level.
