Helping Loved Ones Support LGBT Youth
Presented by Leia Charnin, Ph.D.
2 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS
BASE is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. BASE maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for current practitioners to identify current experiences for LGBT+ individuals and apply evidence-based systemic practices to provide more informed care to LGBT+ youth and their families. LGBT youth experience increased risk of violence victimization, substance use, suicide attempts, traumatic events, and riskier sexual behavior (Johns et al., 2019). We will explore ways to validate the LGBT+ experience to increase community awareness, particularly related to working with families of LGBT youth as a means to reduce mental health concerns and stigma for this population (Sekoni et al., 2017). A variety of trauma-informed and family-systems focused strategies evidencing empirical effectiveness in increasing parenting confidence (Newcomb et al., 2019), strengthening relationships and reducing mental health severity for LGBT+ youth (Diamond, Russon, & Levy, 2016) will be emphasized to equip practitioners with applicable treatment approaches for practice.
