An Introduction to Neurodiversity:

ADHD and Autism

Presented by Jess Mandell, Ph.D.

2 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

BASE is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. BASE maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

DESCRIPTION

Our understanding of neurodiversity has broadened and deepened in recent years, allowing for more accurate and inclusive assessment and intervention procedures (Bougeard, Picarel-Blanchot, Schmid, Campbell, & Buitelaar, 2021). In tandem with increasing recognition and rates of mental health difficulties, more neurodiverse individuals are seeking mental health care (Rong, Yang, Jin, & Wang, 2021). In this continuing education, clinicians who may be less familiar with neurodiversity will learn about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnostic features and neuroaffirming treatment approaches. The course is designed to increase ability and comfortability implementing and adapting evidence-based treatments to better serve neurodiverse clients.

LEARNING OBJECTIONS

Based on the content of this workshop, you will be able to:

· Describe overlapping and diverging diagnostic criteria of ADHD and Autism

· Explain diagnostic procedures and treatment approaches for ADHD and Autism

· Critique if assessment and intervention procedures reflect inclusive and evidence-based practice

· Demonstrate ability to adapt treatments in neuroaffirming ways to better serve neurodiverse clients

AUDIENCE

This training is appropriate for licensed psychologists and other mental health practitioners who use behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapy approaches. Training is at an introductory level.
