Making Sense of Neuropsych Testing and Reports: What to Look for and How to Use Results in Practice

Presented by Michele Mannering, Ph.D.

2 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

BASE is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. BASE maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

DESCRIPTION

Neuropsychological testing reports can often be lengthy and complex for the reader (Baum et al. 2018). Because of these factors, parts of the report often go unread even though there is relevant and pertinent information (Postal et al. 2018). Further, there is often uncertainty about recommendations and how best to implement them (Elias et al. 2018). This course is designed to present clinicians with a deeper understanding of the content included in neuropsychological testing reports. The goal is to help break down different types of testing, understand how to interpret results, and learn to incorporate findings into clinical practice in a way that is easy to digest and meaningful.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Based on the content of this workshop, you will be able to:

·Describe the major areas (cognition, academics, executive functioning) commonly assessed in neuropsychological testing reports.

·Identify common diagnoses rendered from neuropsychological testing and articulate relevance of these diagnoses into clinical practice.

·Compare types of scores used in various tests (i.e., standard scores, scaled scores, T scores and v scores) and how to interpret these scores both quantitatively and qualitatively.

·Critique why testing reports are often unreadable by clinicians and patients, and what changes can be made to make them more understandable.

AUDIENCE

This program is appropriate for licensed psychologists and other mental health practitioners who encounter neuropsychological testing reports in their practice. Training is at an introductory level.
